Join historian and lecturer Dr Richard Marks for a gripping exploration of the two fighters that defined the air war over Europe — Britain’s elegant, agile Spitfire and Germany’s formidable, hard hitting Messerschmitt Bf 109. In Spitfire vs Messerschmitt: The Battle for the Skies, Richard reveals how these iconic aircraft came to symbolise not just opposing nations, but contrasting philosophies of engineering, strategy and aerial combat. With deep expertise and a storyteller’s instinct for human drama, Richard brings to life the pilots who flew them, the designers who shaped them, and the battles in which they clashed — from the tense summer of 1940 to the shifting fortunes of the wider war. He uncovers what each machine could (and couldn’t) do, how tactics evolved, and why the rivalry between the Spitfire and the Messerschmitt remains one of the most compelling duels in military history. Accessible, fast paced and rich with surprising insight, this talk offers a vivid portrait of two aircraft that became legends — and the men whose skill and courage turned them into symbols of a nation’s fate.
