Think the First World War was all trenches and mud in France? Think again. This thought-provoking talk reveals why the Great War earned its title as a world war — not just because of its scale, but because of its reach. British forces fought in deserts, jungles, mountains, and coastlines across the globe, from Gallipoli to East Africa, Mesopotamia to Palestine. These campaigns weren’t sideshows — they were vital to imperial strategy, global supply chains, and the reshaping of international power. Why did Britain commit troops so far afield when France lay just across the Channel? What did these distant theatres mean for the war’s outcome — and for the peace that followed? Join historian Dr Richard Marks to uncover the global dimensions of WW1.
