Many people refer to Reading as being famous for the "Three Bs: Beer, Bulbs and Biscuits" but Reading made so much more. Victorian Reading was a hive of manufacturing, and a local centre of industry. The town was famous for much more than Biscuits, some of Britain's largest and most important companies being based in the town. This talk, whilst concentrating on Reading serves as a good example of the manufacturing that grew up away from the great industrial cities in Lancashire, Yorkshire, and the Midlands so beloved of history books. Find out what happened away from the 'industrial' cities and whether the statement that no industry existed in rural counties is truly the case.
