Mud, myths, and military evolution — the real story of Britain’s war on the Western Front. Popular images of the First World War often reduce it to a grim tableau: British soldiers knee-deep in mud, led by blundering generals, trapped in endless trench warfare. But the truth is far more complex — and far more revealing. In The Western Front in World War I, military and industrial historian Dr Richard Marks dismantles the myths to uncover how the British Army really fought, adapted, and evolved between 1914 and 1918. This talk explores who served on the Western Front, how they were led, and how the officer corps transformed over the course of the war. It reveals how the British Army overcame formidable German defences, and how its changing structure mirrored broader shifts in British society. From tactical innovation to social mobility, the Western Front was not just a battlefield — it was a crucible of change. Was ‘Tommy’ really sent to France just to wallow in the mud? Perhaps not. Join us to discover the untold story of Britain’s war in the west — and why it deserves a closer look.
