Join historian and lecturer Dr Richard Marks for a compelling and practical exploration of why history graduates make exceptional employees; and why businesses that understand their value gain a genuine competitive advantage. In Why You Should Hire History Graduates: Skills for a Smarter Business, Richard reveals how the discipline of history develops precisely the capabilities modern organisations struggle to find: critical analysis, clear communication, evidence based decision making, and the ability to understand people, systems and long term change. Drawing on real examples, Richard shows how history graduates excel at interpreting complex information, spotting patterns others miss, asking the right questions, and communicating insights with clarity and confidence. He explains why these skills matter for strategy, leadership, innovation and risk management — and how they translate directly into better decisions and stronger teams. Accessible, persuasive and grounded in real world experience, this talk challenges assumptions about “vocational” degrees and demonstrates why history graduates are not just employable, but invaluable. For organisations seeking adaptable thinkers, strong communicators and people who can make sense of complexity, the message is clear: hire historians.
