Using the unpublished letters and postcards of a French soldier, the talk paints a picture of life at the beginning of the war on the Marne. A group of friends who went to war and found their lives and the lives of their families changed beyond all recognition. Descriptions of life in and out of the trench are illustrated by postcards from the collection.

A former teacher with 25 years experience, I was the chair of local community archaeology groups. I have given talks at the East Lancashire Western Front Association. I am particularly interested in the industrial archaeology and social history of the area around Burnley, Lancashire, and the First World War.
