Before the NHS (and sometimes after!) so-called "remedies" for various ills were passed down the generations. Although some were fairly harmless, the ingredients of other "cures" can be surprising, and definitely NOT as prescribed by a GP, so don't try this at home!
This talk deals with some of the folklore cures and remedies that have been used over many centuries for different complaints, the reasons why people turned to these remedies and why some areas of the country have a higher incidence of local folklore remedies than others. It also includes a brief outline from the history of healthcare.
This talk would suit a mixed adult udience, and is informative but also contains humour.

My specialisms are History and English Literature, (mainly 18th and 19th centuries) and my talk topics are mainly selected from this period. I also broadcast a regular book review slot and a local history slot on community radio, and regularly contribute to newsletters, magazines and journals of both the Bronte Society and the Jane Austen Centre. I am a member of the Royal Historical Society. My academic qualifications are a BA Honours Degree in Humanities with History, and a Masters Degree in Education, also Post-graduate Certificates in both Education and Educational Learning Support. My talks can be anything from 30 minutes to an hour (or more) in length, depending on requirements, and I am always happy to answer questions afterwards. The talks I give can be of a purely academic nature, or there are other options with a more light-hearted and humorous slant, if required! My aim is to inform and entertain.
