Ladies who influenced history. The speaker normally talks about TWO ladies from a choice of FOUR. Three of the ladies were, at different times, mistress to King Edward VII. The ladies comprise: (1) a well-known Victorian socialite and actress who came from obscurity - and was later painted by pre-Raphaelite J.E. Millais, (2) a Victorian socialite who is an ancestor of a modern-day Royal, (3) a member of the aristocracy, heiress and landowner, socialite, philanthropist and Socialist reformer. (4) a lady from a much lower rung on the social ladder - who is said to have used poison to get rid of those who were "an inconvenience" of some kind. Or was this her form of revenge? We may owe her a debt of gratitude in one way, though, as she helped to change the law.
