Art is full of naked bodies. Male and female, young and old; but where do we draw the line between acceptability and pornography? What constitutes erotica and what is just titillation? Have different societies been shocked in different ways over the years? Are the boundaries different for male or female viewers? Inspired particularly by a visit to the Gallerie D’Orsay, this illustrated talk will look at Art from Classical Greece, through the Renaissance and the French Salon to the 20th Century, exploring what has shocked people, what they found acceptable, and how those distinctions have changed through the centuries. You will have the chance to explore your own boundaries and make up your own mind.

About Edward Gildea

Edward’s life changed as a result of sailing around the world in the Clipper Around the World Yacht Race. Helming though powerful storms and extreme weather, he sensed the impacts of overheated oceans. Those experiences, coupled with the birth of his 4 grandsons, are his motivation as an environmental activist. Back on land, his degree at Cambridge was in English Literature and the History of Art. This gave him profound insights into the work of William Blake and an on-going love of Fine Art and the Insights you can gain when you really look deeply at a painting.
