Did you know that London is the only major European city that grew up without a master plan? Well… a few were drawn up over the centuries, but they were only ever half-followed, or less. The result? A wonderfully unpredictable cityscape where historic churches rub shoulders with glass skyscrapers, and every street corner feels like a new surprise. Unlike cities like Paris—beautiful, yes, but a bit more uniform—London's charm lies in its architectural chaos. It’s a playground for design lovers, full of unexpected contrasts and quirky combinations. In this talk, we will dive into some of the master plans that almost shaped the city and explore buildings caught between cutting-edge design and nostalgic revival. You will also get some tips for your own architectural adventures around London. We will wrap up with a Q&A, so bring your curiosity! The talk has 4 sections:

  1. Example of masterplan (or rather the lack of it!)
  2. Buildings that pay tribute to the past (Neoclassical, Gothic revival, Arts & Crafts)
  3. Buildings that try to innovate (Art Deco) and to rupture with the past (Modernism-Brutalism, post-Modernism)
  4. Suggested visits: the NLA organisation, the London Festival of Architecture, the Royal Institute of British Architects.

About Roberta

Roberta’s love for art and architecture borders on "obsession"—and she’s happily embraced it! Her special passion lies in Modernist architecture, which led her to earn a Graduate Certificate with distinction in History of Art and Architecture from Birkbeck University. That was actually her second degree—her first career is in Economics, with over 20 years of experience in the fast-paced world of financial markets. Now, she channels her energy into making art and architecture not just informative, but fun, relatable and engaging for everyone. She’s the founder of Art Tours with a Theme – ART wiT, a London-based project offering themed tours and talks that bring the city’s creativity to life.
