Bury St Edmunds and the county of Suffolk was an important player in the English Civil war. Its geography, wealth and royal connections all combined to ensure it was at the centre of this conflict. At the same time as the war raged, the county saw the infamous Mathew Hopkins and the witch trials, churches desecrated by 'Basher' Dowsing, and parishes scourged of 'scandalous ministers'. I explore some of the characters involved and events that played out in the town and the wider county during this period of our national history.
