The expression 'Bury Stirs' came as a result of being known as the most violent Abbey town in England during medieval times. Bury and the Abbey was of local and national importance, housing the shrine of England's first Patron saint, St Edmund. As such and also being the county town of the former West Suffolk, it was the focal point of unrest at times of crisis. There were times of violence extending into the 1900s long after the demise of the abbey in 1539.
