Opened in 1942, this talk looks at the history of RAF Langar which opened as a Bomber Command base becoming home to the RAF’s No 207 (Leicetser’s Own) Bomber Sqn.
In October 1943, the airfield was handed of to the Americans and became USAAF Station 490 and home to several units of the IX Air Force Troop Carrier Command with CV47 Dakota’s and WACO Gliders.
After the war, the airfield became a base for the Royal Canadian Air Force as their main supply depot in Europe and as well as teh military units based there, from when it opened it was also home a a civilian repair organisation run by AV Roe (AVRO) repairing and modifying lots of different type of RAF aircraft.

During my 27 years service with the RAF, I was extremely fortunate, some say lucky, to visit some interesting places and meet lots of interesting people, some of which were veterans of previous campaigns fought by our Royal Air Force.
For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by military history, especially when it is related to the Royal Air Force. A subject which has become my full-time passion, or as some would say ‘obsession’.
In 2022 I turned my hobby into a business and formed HistoryFare by becoming a tour guide and public speaker delivering a range of talks covering both local history and military history.
