Fray Bentos was a male Mark IV British Army tank, serial number 2329, F41.
In August 1917, Fray Bentos and its nine man crew were involved in what became known as the longest tank action in World War One.
It’s Commander was Captain Donald Hickling Richardson, a Nottingham man, and he was awarded the Miltary Cross along with his 2i/c 2nd Lt George Hill. Captain Richardson was the son of Arthur Richardson MP who stood as Liberal Candidate for Melton Mowbray.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by military history, especially when it is related to the Royal Air Force. A subject which has become my full-time passion, or as some would say ‘obsession’.
In 2022 I turned my hobby into a business and formed HistoryFare by becoming a tour guide and public speaker delivering a range of talks covering both local history and military history.
