The Melton Mowbray Navigation presentation look at the story of how rthe River Wreake and River Eye were made navaiga=ble from its junction witht he River Soar near Leicester all the way through the Wreake Valley until its terminus at the Melton Basin at Burton End.

The idea of the Melton Canal as it is sometimes referred to came about duiring the 1770s at the height of canal mania period. The first part of the canal, from the Junction to Frisby was opened in 1794 and by 1797 was fully open all the way to Melton.

In 1846, the railway came with the intrioduction of the Syston to Peterborougn railway which unfortunately for the Navigation closure became inevitable and teh Abandonment Act which authorised the closure came into effect on 1st August 1877.

About Brian Fare

During my 27 years service with the RAF, I was extremely fortunate, some say lucky, to visit some interesting places and meet lots of interesting people, some of which were veterans of previous campaigns fought by our Royal Air Force.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by military history, especially when it is related to the Royal Air Force. A subject which has become my full-time passion, or as some would say ‘obsession’.

In 2022 I turned my hobby into a business and formed HistoryFare by becoming a tour guide and public speaker delivering a range of talks covering both local history and military history.
