At the end of 1943, after fighting in North Africa, Tuinisia, Sicily and Italy, the British 1st Airborne Division was withdrawn from the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations back to England to prepare, re-equip and train for operations including D-Day and Market Garden.
The units of the 1st Airborne set up their HQ’s and billets across Rutland, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire forming an Airborne corrider with the US 82nd Airborne Division and the US IXth Af Troop Carrier Command noperating from airfields in the area.
In this talk we look at some of the main units of the 1st Airborne and where they were billeted mainly focusing on the Melton Mowbray and Grantham areas.

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by military history, especially when it is related to the Royal Air Force. A subject which has become my full-time passion, or as some would say ‘obsession’.
In 2022 I turned my hobby into a business and formed HistoryFare by becoming a tour guide and public speaker delivering a range of talks covering both local history and military history.
