In 1980 I came to the UK from New Zealand for what was initially planned to be a one year working holiday. I was 20 years old and started my first job which was as an electronics engineer with Marconi Radar Systems Ltd in Chelmsford. This led on to all sorts of adventures. I spend a few years in Portsmouth working on fast patrol boats which were being built for the Egyptian Navy. I also spent three months in Egypt which was a fantastic experience. My next posting was to the Sultanate of Oman where I spent two and a half years experiencing a wide range of adventures, travelling in the desert, climbing mountains, running with the Hash running club, learning to water ski and skin diving. After five years with Marconi, I joined a German Company which made high specification electronic test equipment. This was a sales job, and I spent the next five years travelling all over the south of the UK visiting various organisations and meeting lots of interesting people.
