The reasons for the decline in agriculture in the 1870s were many - economic, technological, social, political, to name but a few. The situation was much more complex than people realise, and once begun, could not be averted. This talk will explain the pressures experienced by agricultural communities in the 1870s and 1880s, what life was like for agricultural workers, and how farmers responded to the many changes.
