This talk looks at a common problem, when divorce was not so common - and the problems caused for modern genealogists. The talk covers how people used marriage by license to get around obstacles to marriage, how easy it was to marry someone when you were already still legally married, and how some unhappily married people set up a second family, without getting divorced. These situations pose particular problems for anyone tracing their ancestors or compiling a family tree. The talk is illustrated with real examples of a range of situations and explains some of the legal changes that have taken place around marriage.
