Using the unpublished letters and postcards of a French soldier, the talk paints a picture of life at the beginning of the war on the Marne. Comparing the events experienced by the 3rd Regiment of Colonial Infantery (3e RIC) recorded in the regimental diary with a soldier's descriptions of life in and out of the trench, the talk is illustrated by postcards from the family collection.

I've a life long interest in archaeology and history and I am a graduate of the University of York. I have experience in excavation, guiding walks and speaking to groups. A former teacher with 25 years experience, I was the chair of local community archaeology groups. I have given talks at the East Lancashire Western Front Association. I am particularly interested in the industrial archaeology and social history of the area around Burnley, Lancashire, and the First World War.
