Illustrated with slides and his own original poetry this talk captures Edward’s experiences of sailing around the world in Clipper Round the World Yacht races and into the Arctic Ocean. It will describe the connection you feel with the energy of planet as you sail across oceans. What is it like to helm during a Pacific storm? How do you cope with big waves? What is life like below decks for weeks on end? Can poetry capture more than photographs? On the voyages I learned, paradoxically, how very small the planet is and how very delicately balanced, even though it feels powerful and violent. I connected with dolphins, whales and albatrosses in their world but saw graveyards of bleached coral. I learned how the planet offers more natural, clean energy than we could ever need and how the future of humanity will be determined by what we have done to our oceans.

About Edward Gildea

Edward’s life changed as a result of sailing around the world in the Clipper Around the World Yacht Race. Spending months at sea, negotiating powerful storms and extreme weather, gave him a powerful insight into the impacts of overheated oceans. Those experiences, coupled with the birth of his 4 grandsons, are his motivation as an environmental activist. A former inner city headteacher and educational consultant, he now works through the Church, the Green Party, Greenpeace and Al Gore’s Climate Reality organisation to ensure the future of everyone’s children. His degree at Cambridge was in English Literature and the History of Art. This gave him profound insights into the work of William Blake and an on-going love of Fine Art and the Insights you can gain when you really look deeply at a painting.
