This talk describes the inspiring struggle of Canadian war hero Frederick Banting to discover insulin in 1922. Before this children would die within months of the onset of diabetes. Banting had to fight the authorities and the scientific orthodoxy to prove the existence of insulin. I also describe the amazing story of Elizabeth Hughes, daughter of the American Secretary of State, who survived for 4 years on a starvation diet until insulin became available to save her.
