This talk describes the vital breakthroughs which led finally to Watson and Crick working out the double helix structure of DNA - now possibly one of the most iconic shape we see. We hear about the rivalry between the greatest chemist of the 20th century, Linus Pauling in California, and Jim Watson and Francis Crick working in Cambridge. We learn that Watson took advantage of Rosalind Franklin, the best X- ray crystallographer in the world, by gaining access to her photographs without her knowledge of consent. We come up to the present by discussing how DNA works, the PCR process and DNA fingerprinting. The talk is illustrated with about 50 colourful slides.
