The extraordinary bravery of animals in wartime.
An inspiring and deeply moving journey through the remarkable stories of animals whose courage, loyalty, and sacrifice helped shape the outcome of conflicts throughout history.
This powerful presentation explores the vital roles played by animals during wartime and examines the history of the Dickin Medal, widely regarded as the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross. Established in 1943 by Maria Dickin, founder of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), the award recognises acts of outstanding gallantry and devotion to duty by animals serving alongside military and civilian forces.
Through compelling storytelling, historical photographs, and extraordinary real-life accounts, audiences will discover the achievements of carrier pigeons that delivered life-saving messages, dogs that located casualties and protected soldiers, horses and mules that transported vital supplies, and many other animals whose bravery made a profound difference in times of war.
The lecture highlights some of the most famous Dickin Medal recipients and reveals the often-overlooked contribution animals have made to military operations across the world. Along the way, audiences gain a greater understanding of the unique bond between humans and animals in the most challenging of circumstances.
Both educational and highly emotional, this presentation consistently generates strong audience engagement, combining moments of inspiration, admiration, and reflection. It is a celebration of courage in all its forms and a reminder that heroism is not limited to humanity alone.
A memorable and uplifting presentation suitable for audiences of all ages, particularly those interested in military history, animal welfare, and the remarkable stories of courage that emerge during times of conflict.
