Understanding how Britain recognises outstanding service.

A fascinating insight into one of the nation's oldest and most respected traditions: the recognition of exceptional service through the British Honours System.

This engaging lecture explores the origins and development of the honours system, tracing its evolution from medieval knighthoods and orders of chivalry to the modern national awards presented today. Through historical examples, images, and personal insight, audiences gain a clear understanding of how the system operates and why it continues to play an important role in British society.

The presentation examines the various honours and awards available, including MBEs, OBEs, CBEs, knighthoods, gallantry decorations, and other forms of national recognition. Audiences will discover the achievements these honours recognise and learn about some of the remarkable individuals whose dedication, innovation, courage, and public service have helped shape the United Kingdom.

Particular attention is given to the many ordinary people who have made extraordinary contributions within their communities, often without seeking recognition for their efforts. Their stories serve as a powerful reminder that significant achievements can be found in every corner of society.

The lecture also provides practical guidance on how to nominate someone for an honour, demystifying the process and empowering attendees to recognise the unsung heroes within their own communities, organisations, and professions.

Informative, inspiring, and highly accessible, this presentation offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of Britain's most prestigious institutions and encourages audiences to celebrate excellence, service, and civic contribution.

Suitable for community groups, charities, civic organisations, historical societies, and anyone interested in British history, public service, and national recognition.

About Ashley Jones MBE

★ About Ashley Jones MBE

Ash was born and raised in South Wales and began his professional journey at the age of 17 when he joined the Royal Air Force. After serving for ten years in the RAF, he went on to build a distinguished 23-year career as a police officer in both England and Wales.

Alongside his public service career, Ash has been a dedicated volunteer with a range of charitable organisations, contributing at every level — from senior leadership to frontline engagement. His commitment to community work led to one of his projects, the Senior Citizen Liaison Team, receiving the prestigious United Nations Public Service Award in 2017.

Since retiring from law enforcement in 2020, Ash has channelled his experience into helping others through his work as a wellbeing trainer with a national military charity. He is also an accomplished professional speaker and enrichment lecturer, delivering talks across the UK and internationally on motivational subjects relating to personal development and historical leaders.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Ash has also found success in the field of digital media. He hosts a lifestyle YouTube channel, The Chap's Guide, which focuses on men's style, self-improvement, and wellbeing. His contributions in this field were recognised in 2025 when he was admitted to the Society of Authors for his body of work. That same year, he also became a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Stationers and Newspaper Makers, one of London's historic livery companies.

Ash is married to Rachael, a company director, and together they have one son, Alex, who is passionate about sport and the Scouting movement.
