Stirling Castle is one of the largest and most important castles in Scotland, both historically and architecturally serving as both fortress and Royal palace.Its strategic location, guarding what was, until the 1890s, the farthest downstream crossing of the River Forth led to it being besieged on at least eight occasions including several during the Wars of Scottish Independence, with the last being in 1746, when Bonnie Prince Charlie unsuccessfully tried to take the castle. This is its story.

I have a Humanities degree from Bristol Polytechnic and subsequently qualified as a teacher in Further Education. I have been interested in history for as long as I can remember and enjoy demolishing popular historical myths. I have delivered courses on a wide range of historical subjects (hopefully with enthusiasm and humour) at Peterborough City College, Peterborough Museum, Stamford Arts Centre, the Guildhall Arts Centre Grantham and also to a wide variety of local groups and societies for some twenty years. In answer to the question ‘What is your favourite period of history?’ I would be most likely to say “Just the last 3,250 years”. In addition to participating in historical re-enactments and giving guided tours I currently volunteer at the Cromwell Museum in Huntingdon.
