Witchcraft nowadays is a subject for romance and horror stories but the reality is far different. Few claims were made of Black Magic and witches’ sabbats but the people of Yorkshire were still not safe. Accusations of witchcraft could be made against you by people you had known for years. All it took was an ‘over the fence’ argument to get out of hand. This could lead to a ‘legal’ process of humiliation, attempts to force a confession and, perhaps, even to death.
