Thanks to authors like Dan Brown, most people know that for two hundred years the Templars were considered to be the hight of Western Chivalry. Yet the Oreder was disbanded amongst claims of heresy and blasphemy.
Fewer people realise that the Templars held vast estates in Yorkshire, the majority of which had been given to them as pious offerings by people who thought that such acts of devotion might lead to remission of their sins. This made the organisation one of the wealthiest landowners in medieval Yorkshire.
And then it all fell apart…
This talk considers how the Templars managed the estates they had been given and how the Yorkshire Templars fared in the dark days of their prosecution for heresy.
