In May 1942 the City of Exeter was chosen as one of five historical cities to be destroyed by the Luftwaffe in response to the RAF Bomber Command bombing the German city of Lubeck. Known as the Baedeker raids, Exeter would experience the horror of night time raids with the city being extensively damaged and many buildings being totally destroyed. A Polish Squadron based at RAF Exeter would contribute to saving the city from being completely destroyed.
