Mary Bateman was the most notorious woman of the early 19th century: thief, con artist, fortune-teller, dispenser of quack medicines, and eventually murderer. Her life in Leeds reads like the plot of a Gothic horror novel. Yet thousands came to watch her execution. This presentation looks at her life in detail and examines how magic can still flourish in a Georgian city.
