‘The Chimes’ was Dickens’s second Christmas story, written the year following the publication of ‘A Christmas Carol’. It tells of Toby Veck, a discouraged elderly messenger, who has lost faith in humanity and is drawn to the bell tower of a church on New Year’s Eve, where he finds the spirits of the bells and their goblin attendants.
This is a dramatised reading, much as Dickens himself presented it to his adoring audiences, using different voices and mannerisms to bring the various characters to life, and runs for approximately 1 hour.
