The English are renowned throughout the world as a nation with more eccentrics than any other country. But what is an eccentric? Some years ago, the first and only, formal study was undertaken by two academics. The talk examines the results of this study and describes examples of some of history’s strangest people. If not eccentric, why do ‘normal’ people participate and celebrate eccentric traditions, with examples of those taking place around the country in a typical year. A look at some other odd historical customs and finally, are there any present-day eccentrics?

About Bill McNaught

I started work in 1961 as a Westland Helicopters engineering apprentice spending 25 years with the company before moving on to manage a number of other aviation and defence companies. I retired in 2008 and started giving talks as a hobby. My talks are all the result of extensive research of the subject and I try and include as many pictures and film as possible. I particularly like ‘fascinating historical characters’ .
