The talk reveals how trading money for titles- in the late 19th century flourished. Help was needed to maintain English stately homes and extravagant lifestyles of racing, gambling and travel. The American economy was thriving in the ‘Gilded Age’ of industry and so the dollar-rich daughters of the newly wealthy were welcomed to keep the coffers filled. We all know of how Cora Crawley in the TV series, brought her fortune to save Downton Abbey when she married the Viscount. Also the recent TV series The Buccaneers, based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel-where Nan married the Duke of Tintagel. Now find out about how it all happened, how Minnie Paget was the go-between or marriage broker who, having married into English aristocracy herself- paved the way for many more American girls to do the same. Dollar rich, these young Americans searching for titled husbands were scorned for their brashness and lack of good manners by strict Edwardian high society. However, titled lords and dukes found the girls a breath of fresh air, and welcomed them- along with their money. Listen to the stories of Consuelo Vanderbilt who married Sunny,Duke of Marlborough, Jenny Jerome, mother of Winston Churchill, Consuelo Yznaga who became Duchess of Manchester,Nancy Langhorne who married Viscount Astor,Mary Curzon who became Vicerine of India- and many more.
