Have you ever wondered why Napoleon always posed for portraits with his hand inside his jacket? The answer is he was copying a Greek notion that it symbolised firm leadership! Napoleon used art for his political ends, promoting his image in paintings, proclaiming his power. A small man with big ideas and an ego to match,Napoleon was an early PR believer. What few of us know is that when conquering countries he made a condition of surrender, that he could select art treasures- which now form the Louvre Museum collection. His wife Josephine became a style icon, with her Empire line dresses and fascination with sculpture, paintings and all things artistic. Her collection is in the Chateau de Malmaison, where she retreated after Napoleon divorced her for not producing an heir. What is also a little known fact is that many of today's European royalty descend from her children in her first marriage to Alexandre de Beauharnais. The talk explores how her influence and Napoleon's pursuit of lasting fame and a legacy in his art collections.
