Dynamite- a talk about anarchists in the late 19th century who fought for freedom by violent means-using bombs and the new dynamite developed by Alfred Nobel! Rosa, a possible relative of mine was, I thought, during my research, a bomb-throwing Russian anarchist. It turned out she was not a bomber, but definitely a supporter of the cause. The cause being worker’s fight for their rights against their oppressors: factory owners and the state. So, my research continued into its appeal and popularity. How did a movement that saw six kings, a US president and two Prime Ministers assassinated sweep through Europe, the UK and eventually New York- from its Russian roots? Why did anarchy begin and its appeal to women especially, their names now forgotten, who became anarcho-feminists. Many were English, less violently active then their European sisters, but all saw it as a way to fight for women’s rights. Remember World War One was started after an anarchist supporter, shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand. I also examine how jihadism and present-day action groups continue to fight for their ideal. Violent action was called “propaganda of the deed” as opposed to “propaganda of the word.”- the best way to exact revenge.
