Once described as 'The Hardest Working River in Europe' the Irwell flows through Salford and Manchester before it becomes the Manchester Ship Canal and continues its stately progress to the sea at Liverpool. Mark Addy was credited with saving more than 50 souls from the river in Salford and even had a pub named after him which, ironically was washed away in a flood on Boxing Day 20156. But there is much more to this river than one man. The talk will include stories of a fatal boat launch, the unrequited love of Manchester's Ice Maiden, boat races and pleasure gardens, pollution and pike fishing and why Merseyside should have been Irwellside.
