This talk delves into the fascinating history of a small suburb of Manchester which was home to some of the greatest writers, clergymen, scientists, bankers and personalities of the nineteenth century. Although they all came from, or lived in Smedley, the name is all but forgotten in Manchester.

About Martin Gittins

Martin Gittins is a retired Primary School Deputy Headteacher. He has had a lifelong interest in Local History, particularly focussing on North Manchester, and, since 2008 he has been studying the Peterloo Massacre of 1819. He is able to give talks on Local History Subjects, Peterloo, and a small number of other subjects.
