In 1877 a young and very inexperienced Cumbrian GP called William Briggs, volunteered to go to Turkey to tend the wounded of the Turkish Army was they fought against a massive Russian invasion. He was present at Plevna, where one of the bloodiest battles of the C19th took place. Briggs returned from Turkey after a few months, but his extraordinary year was not over, for on his return he married Rosa Mingaye, a celebrated, but now forgotten water-colourist. My talk centres on this episode in the life of a man who was for many years the medical officer of health for Wigton, and who accomplished much in his life. He is the subject of 'Love and War, my novel.
