The sea surface may appear complex and chaotic, but it is subject to the laws of physics, and many aspects of its behaviour can be explained and predicted mathematically. In this talk I give an overview of how sea waves form, and how they respond to wind, gravity and water depth. I looks at storms and swells, at 'killer waves' and at the Severn Bore. I include the results I have replicated of work that I did in the 1960s. I assume familiarity with school level maths but the talk is illustrated with lots of photographs and diagrams, as well as some equations. I can adapt the talk to suit the needs of the audience.
