Poetry is my first literary love and was my intial publication success, with a poem about a fox published in the children's section of the Caravan Club Magazine, aged nine. I have since gone on to competition success and publication, although writing poetry is something I largely do for myself. I also teach both poetry writing and poetry appreciation to adults and wrote a dissertation at Masters level on the close reading of two poems. What I have discovered over the years is that people are nervous of poetry. Sometimes traumatised by school poetry lessons, struggling with comprehension and notions of elitism, they avoid engaging with one of the most delightful forms of human expression. This talk aims to dispell those fears with an interactive look at what poetry is and some famous examples, identifying how they work in a way that can be transferred to other poems. It's great fun!
Views: 644 | Enquiries: 1I am a freelance writer, writing across a range of genres, locally and nationally. I am perhaps best known for writing as my dogs, idiosyncratic Border Terriers. Of the two latest encumbants, Teddy, the elder, has his own blog, magazine column, and Twitter account, whilst our younger dog, Bear, is still on the chubby crayons stage of her literary career. Our first Border, the late, great, and extremely badly behaved, Rolo, wrote two books which give his particular mischevious view on life, from knee high. In addition to my humorous dog talks, I also give talks on more serious topics: my journey as a writer, animal writing and also on poetry appreciation, dispelling those early school experiences with a more enjoyable, enlightened understanding. I am included by West Kent and East Sussex WIs, in their speakers' directories. I am a reliable, eloquent, engaging and entertaining speaker, happy delivering to small or large groups, by advanced pre-booking, or a relatively short notice subject to availibility.
