Details of talks given by Ian Williams
I am a North East based performance poet. I offer performances rather than talks. With a range of entertaining poems and anecdotes, I have sets that would be suitable for various groups (Think more a mix of Roger McGough, Pam Ayres and John Cooper Clarke rather than Wordsworth or Carol Ann Duffy). My performances are energetic, light and engaging, and filled with humour, although I add a couple of more serious poems to the sets, just to provide some shade to the lightness. They are accessible for all ages and contain no swearing. I cover a range of subjects such as: The things your mother used to say to you when you were young, How bad men are at buying presents, My fondness for cups of tea, How I got into poetry and where I get ideas, Old telephone boxes, How my grandmother used to gossip, The perils of getting older, and How bad men are at doing the shopping. Performance lengths can be developed to suit the needs of the group. I have received a range of recommendations including: Central Gosforth WI. 'Huge thanks go to Ian Williams, The Amble Poet, for his performance at our meeting last week. His poetry was humorous, witty and steeped in a world known to all of us … everyday life! If you get the chance to see him perform don’t let it pass you by' and 'Blyth Spirit WI recently had the Amble Poet. He was fabulous, we had no idea what to expect, but he's very humorous with a great insight into human behaviour, well worth spending an evening with.' (Links to Facebook and YouTube videos of snippets of me performing can be sent if you get in contact - to give you a flavour of what I do.) If you think poetry is not for you this just could be the thing to change your mind.
