The Norfolk Broads were created by medieval peat diggings between the 9th and 14th centuries, later flooded as sea level rose. Local people worked the waterways as peat cutters, reed cutters, fishermen and wherrymen. Today, this historic landscape is protected for its wildlife, scenery and recreation and cultural heritage sites.
