*Karey Mullis was a crazy Californian beach bum, *who just happened to be a brilliant biochemist. He seemed to be high on LSD most of the time - imagining that he was being chased by a giant raccoon in the sky. *He invented the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) process, *which is used to make millions of copies of a DNA sample, so that it can be used, for example in DNA fingerprinting. This talk gives the background to DNA studies, before explaining how the technique works, and for which Mullis was awarded the Nobel prize.

Ian is the retired Headmaster of a large secondary school and now gives highly illustrated talks which have been extremely well received . He has degrees from several universities and has developed a number of talks with a biological/medical theme. I have been included on the Speaker list of West Sussex Women’s Institutes, following and audition. Talks can be anything between 30 and 60 minutes, according to your preference.
