A brilliant mathematician and physicist, Oppenheimer contributed major advances to our knowledge of atomic theory. He was a polymath and loved reading poetry in the original Sanskrit. He learnt to speak Dutch well enough in six weeks to deliver a lecture on atomic physics. An archetypal intellectual, many doubted that he had the managerial skills to bring the Manhattan Project to fruition. But he proved the doubters wrong and the bomb brought World War II to an end. He was friends with people in the Communist Party of America, and was discredited and hounded by the FBI under J Edgar Hoover.
