Part II takes the story of Northern Ireland to the present day – and is updated to reflect political developments. It starts with the contribution made to the Great War by Nationalists and Unionists in Ulster, the establishment of Northern Ireland during the Irish war for independence, its surprising importance during the Second World War and Cold War, the Troubles, the Peace Process, and Good Friday Agreement.

Most relevantly, it explains the ‘Back-stop’, ‘Protocol’, and ‘Windsor Framework’: what they meant for the UK, why they have been problematic, and where we are today. Understanding the historical background is essential to grasping the complexities of the Northern Ireland issue as the UK and the EU seek a workable relationship that respects the Good Friday Agreement and try to move forward.
