Florence Nightingale has always been regarded as a British heroine but Mary Seacole is less well known.
This talk looks at these two women and how they both established their reputations in the Crimea but in very different ways.
What were their social backgrounds? How did they influence and dictate their later lives?
Why did they go to the Crimea and what did they actually do there? What did the country think about them on their return?
Why did Florence remain in the public eye whilst Mary disappeared? What started Mary's reemergence and what is the status of the two women today?
