It fits so well, with unique chemical and physical properties. Was it ‘created’ and ‘designed’ by some deity, with ‘life’ in mind? Or did life evolve to take advantage of water’s natural properties? What if ice didn’t float? Would we still be here? Why is it liquid? Chemistry says it should be a gas. What role does it play in our blood and our cells? It absorbs the sun’s harmful radiation, whilst letting the colours through. Its high surface tension creates rain drops. Are these coincidences or by ‘design’? The planet is awash – where did it all come from? Is all life water based? Both on Earth and elsewhere in the cosmos? Might ‘ET’, if we meet him, be based on ammonia, or even sulphuric acid? When and what was ‘first life’? Can we define ’life’?
