Many people have heard of King Alfred, king of Wessex, founder of the English Navy and victorious in the fight against the Vikings. But how many of these stories are actually true? Why are there so many legends and myths about this Dark Age warrior and why does he deserve the title of The Great?

In this talk Richard will look at the various stories associated with King Alfred and separate the myth from the reality to try and find the real Alfred.

About Richard Gibbs

Richard's talks reflect his broad interests. His latest book is about the Pilgrims' Way from Winchester to Canterbury, entitled 'A Very English Pilgrimage'. He has also written and published books on local history. He has appeared on radio and gives talks and presentations on various themes. He enjoyed a successful business career, and continues to work as a lecturer and academic. He holds a PhD from the University of Gloucestershire. He is married and lives near Wokingham in Berkshire.
