This takes us back to the turn of the 19th century when vivisection was common. Protests against it in London led to huge demonstrations and pitched battle between medical students on the one hand and workers and suffragettes on the other. At the centre of this was a brown dog.

Les has a background in pathology, specifically biochemistry, as well as in community health and education. Although from Liverpool he has lived and worked in five countries in Africa over the last 40+ years His current research work is in animal ethics, particularly examining language, texts, ideology, moral disengagement and mass violence. He is a Research Fellow with the University of the Free State, South Africa and a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, UK
