The darkly comic aspects of researching family history – stories and songs of love, loss, jealousy, betrayal, revenge…..often funny, sometimes poignant, occasionally shocking.
A forebear deported to Australia for sheep-stealing can, after a couple of hundred years, acquire a certain raffish glamour, but how do you feel if the uncomfortable truth you discover is closer to the present day?
Miranda presents a set of original songs woven around some of the more bizarre stories unearthed from her family history. This talk is illustrated by a slideshow, for which she will need a screen or suitable blank wall.Views: 479 | Enquiries: 3
Miranda didn’t start playing guitar or writing songs until her mid-fifties, but has more than made up for it since! She has recorded two CDs, ‘Petrol Station Flowers’ and ‘Lifting the Lid’, and published a booklet of song lyrics, ‘Late-Flowering Lyricist’. She performs in pubs, folk clubs and at festivals, and several of her songs have been played on local radio. Raunchy, romantic, heartbreaking, humorous, Miranda’s subjects range from shipwrecks to stalkers; from the perils of punting to that awkward situation where you discover your lover’s name sewn into the back of his underpants…..
She has established herself as a popular speaker, telling the stories behind the songs and delighting audiences with a light-hearted mix of words and music. Typical comments include: “It was so nice to be able to hear all the words you were singing”, and “We really enjoyed something that was a little bit different”.
She lives in Sherborne (having recently moved from Saffron Walden in Essex), and is normally prepared to travel throughout Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. Please contact her to discuss the options for bookings further afield.
From March to October Miranda is available mornings, afternoons and evenings; November to February, afternoons only. She will always consider a short-notice booking to cover a cancellation.
Miranda plays an acoustic guitar, unplugged in small venues, or through an amplifier and with a microphone for larger ones. She can supply all the equipment, which is PAT tested, and she holds Public Liability Insurance.
